The poor hygienic conditions at the Serekunda
Health Center were the incentive for Susanne
Skov Petersen founding SOS-Gambia.

We have provided assistance to several Health
Centers in Gambia, and finally the Gambian
government have opened up there eye’s for the
need and has initiated a renovation on several
of these centers.

In the course of time, there have been installed
new toilets and sinks, improved sewer systems,
and renovated bed sections. Also, with the help
of good sponsors, containers with hospital
equipment, medicine, uniforms and linens has
reached the health centers.

In principle, it is free to attend school in
Gambia, but the cost of school uniforms,
transport and the like, have due to economic
reasons led many families to keep their children
home from teaching.

That is why, we support technical schools, which
can help these young people, and give them a 3
- 4 year basic education, combined with a
professional training. This means that they have
the opportunity to learn a craft, and thereby be
able to provide for themselves.

We have great ambitions, and have so far
achieved many good results.
We have among other things expanded the
public school in Kalula and established a water
well on the schools grounds, which means that it
is now possible to grow crops, with the result
that the school are now economic self-
supported.

Currently we have approximately 200 sponsored
youngsters that we are in repeating close
contact with. School fee is paid directly to the
schools, and there are correspondence and
photos between the sponsor and sponsored
youngster.

At our annual visit to Gambia, we always make
home visits to several families, to ensure, that
we continuously have contact with the families
and students.

The costs of the travel, as well as the home
visits are held by the help organizations
representative themselves.
